On this day I’ve been diagnosed with depression

On this day I’ve been diagnosed with depression.
It’s a biochemical illness of the brain,
Or so I’m told by the medical profession.

Research proves it’s a serotonin depletion,
And just as physical as chest pain or chilblain.
On this day I’ve been diagnosed with depression.

It has somehow become a common condition,
But popping a pill can make us normal again.
Or so I’m told by the medical profession.

Doctor, please, I think that I may have a question,
I’m afraid that you may find it rather profane.
‘I am a proficient, experienced clinician,
But there is only so much that I can explain.’

On this day I’ve been diagnosed with depression,
Or so I’m told by the medical profession.

    I know your condition
    Don’t take any pill
    Just change your nutrition
    Medication is overkill

    Homeopathy is worth a try
    Don’t let your brain fry

the drugs don’t make you happy
    only filter
    black and white
until your world is filled with greyness
and you cannot reach the light

the drugs don’t make you happy
    they only keep you numb
    you can’t fall down
    you can’t climb up
    and it’s difficult to cum

the drugs don’t make you happy
    just null the symptoms
    of this disease
they give us pills and send us home
    while our soul shouts please

these drugs won’t make me happy
    trapped here in this abyss,
    where fog and dark
    surround me and my days
    are all like this.

these drugs won’t make us happy
this is separation of our parts
    and only bringing them together
can bring colour to our hearts.

I like the envoi, the centre does not hold. You should enter this for the next Hippocrates Prize, even if many doctors seem unable to understand your perspective.

it was a only 5 minute poem but relates to depression being not only a set of chemical imbalances and symptoms but as Alice Miller writes, a loss of our true selves. what is the Hippocrates prize? I’m not a hypocrite : (
